I turned Veggie…
Stories of Yoga and Life from an Isha Hatha Yoga Teacher living in Zürich, Switzerland
As I’m writing I find these stories coming to me in no particular order, there is just so much to tell from these past 5 years. All I know right now is that the experience of it all has been truly exhilarating.
So this was quite an interesting breakthrough for me. I was raised in a meat eating family, around once a week we might have a meat dish, later when I was living in Switzerland I was even cooking my own chicken dish.
The first Yoga program I did with ISHA which was the Inner Engineering program was the beginning of a deep transformative process for me however coming into the program from Switzerland I was still eating and enjoying sausages.
I remember being in the Isha Ashram in Coimbatore, India back in the December 2015. I was staying there for a duration of about 4 weeks, in this time I happened to share the accommodation with a lovely Scottish lady who had been a meditator for some time. We were having a conversation about food where I told her how much I love my meat indulgence and wouldn’t want to give it up for anything, her immediate response to that was that in her experience eating meat was something she could never go back to, and she was a complete vegetarian now! I was somewhat astounded by such a discovery from a westerner.
After those 4 beautiful weeks I left the Ashram to return to Switzerland. Back in Zurich I was living and doing my Sadhana in a very conscientious manner.
It was now February of 2016, I went out to restaurant one night where I absolutely loved the pork sausages they served and had enjoyed them many times before. I ordered and once they were served I looked at them and my instant feeling was of not to eat them I felt very off within myself suddenly. I got very confused with what I was experiencing and since the feeling was alien I went on and consumed the food, but I felt horrible about it for 3-4 days and also felt very bewildered by the whole thing.
But it wasn’t over yet ..
A week later we visited the same restaurant again. I ordered the same dish out of some compulsion of-course.
The dish arrived and the negated feeling towards the meal was more intense than before and could not have been ignored I nonetheless chose to eat it as I still wasn’t fully comprehending the nature of what was happening towards one of my favourite meals. I ate the food I had ordered but this time the experience of having eaten another living form was overwhelming, I felt a kind of guilt that lasted almost 2 weeks. I knew at once that Yoga was working..
The verdict was out and from this point I knew I was a vegetarian … more to come
